The Lawrence Exhibition at Jesus College

A note by Tony Phelps:

The Lawrence Brothers’ Memorial Fund financed the establishment at Jesus College Oxford of a Scholarship or Exhibition, which was first competed for in 1939. It was created in memory of three of the Lawrence brothers. Namely:

Thomas Edward Lawrence, Exhibitioner (and Scholar) of Jesus College (aka Lawrence of Arabia who died after a motorcycle accident on 19 May 1935)

William George Lawrence, Exhibitioner and Casberd Scholar of St John’s College (killed in action on 23 October 1915)

Frank Helier Lawrence, Exhibitioner of Jesus College (killed in action on 9 May 1915)

The Scholarships or Exhibitions were open in the first place “only to boys who have attended the City of Oxford High School for Boys for at least two years of the five years preceding the Examination”.

If there had been enough funds, a further award would have been made to “boys who have resided in Oxfordshire or Berkshire for the two years preceding the Examinations.”

Any alterations to the conditions and regulations of the awards had to be approved by two remaining brothers: namely Montagu Robert Lawrence of St John’s College and Arnold Walter Lawrence of New College, “and now of Queen’s College, Cambridge”.

Tony asks: Is there a list of Old Boys who were awarded the Lawrence Exhibitions?
