Changes of Staff in 1959

From THE CITY OF OXFORD HIGH SCHOOL MAGAZINE Vol LI,iii JULY 1959

School Notes

It makes for continuity and tradition on a School Staff when changes are infrequent.

We have seldom had to report the departure of three masters at the end of a school year, but this year we have to record that Mr. Peter Holmes is leaving us to become an English master at Cheney School and Mr. Bernard Vaughan is going to a large new school at Coventry as a House master as well as Divinity Master. To both of them we offer our best wishes and also our thanks for the unselfish work they have done here: Mr. Holmes in particular at the swimming baths and Mr. Vaughan on the games field and this last year as Vice-President of Rugby football. We must also say farewell to Mr. B. C. Atkin because of his health which we hope will recover after a period of rest. Mr. Atkin came here originally in 1932 as Senior Mathematics Master, leaving in 1934, but returning in 1941 to give help during the severe difficulties of wartime. He was then an enthusiastic officer in the A.T.C. and was also valuable as a referee on the rugger held.

In their places we welcome Mr. H. E. Rexworthy of Bristol, and formerly of Southfield School, Mr. M. L. Bufton also of Bristol (formerly of Leominster Grammar School) and Mr. T. B. Tate of Brasenose, Oxford (formerly of R.G.S., Worcester) who had visited us when playing scrum half for their 1st XV. We also welcome Mr. A. V. Kiley from Erith Technical School, who is to open a Metal Work room.

Miss B. H. Yeates left us at half term to take up an appointment at Harwell. During her four years here, in which post she followed her father, Sidney Yeates, M.A., she had become a most valuable member of the administration in ensuring the smooth running of a machine which nowadays gets even more complicated.

When she left, the school shewed their appreciation by presenting her with a travelling clock, and the staff gave her a week-end case.
