Valedictory – The Final Edition

THE CITY OF OXFORD HIGH SCHOOL MAGAZINE VoL. LVIII, ili JULY 1966 No. 186

School Notes

With this issue, the C.O.H.S. MagazIne must come to an end.

It will be remembered by some that legal notices announcing the closure of the Schools were posted here and at Southfield as long ago as 1961 but somehow it all seemed unreal.

Now it is about to become fact and we still can scarcely believe it. Doubtless the same feelings to some extent exist at Southfield School but they will not be leaving their present site. In this issue, therefore, we may be allowed to look back on condition that thereafter we turn our faces resolutely to the future and determine to do all in our power to make Oxford School a success, thereby ensuring that the aims and intentions of the Founders of both Schools may be maintained and developed.

In this final edition

  • The sudden death of Dr. Chaundy, the Chairman of School Governors, on April 14th, prevents us from having his lively reminiscences, but elsewhere in this issue will be found
  • letters from Lord Hurcomb and Lord Salter who played a great part in the founding of the MAGAZINE.
  • In addition Mr. Lay has contributed an article from his long and close connection with the School.
  • We have reprinted two early articles concerning Prof. T. H. Green and the founding of the School
  • and have included a number of photographs, some of which have been published before, which we feel present members of the School will be proud to keep.

Turning to the proper function of School Notes – to record the happenings at School in this its final term — we have first to mention several changes of Staff.

Mr. J. A. Wood, on his return from Kenya, was appointed to Oxtord School to help with the Science from August 31st, and has come to fill Mr. Baird’s place this term. We have lost Mr. Larr who has taken up a full time appointment in Abingdon. We are grateful to him for his help with Music as well as French. Mr. Johnson was appointed in January to be responsible for the buildings at Oxford School and we consider ourselves very fortunate to have the services of Mr. Kelly. Both he and Mrs. Kelly have already been extremely helpful in many ways and we thank them and wish them well in the future.
