Mr McCready

“Thanks for the update on the web. I had hoped to see a reference to Mr. McCready at some stage and also to the student teachers about whom I wrote some time ago.

As I said at the time, one of the students was a pretty accurate shot with the blackboard duster, hitting a sleepy boy almost 100% of the time, taught poorly and could run like the clappers on the sports field.

He was probably Chris Chataway. I remember that, in a relay race in which I was the last runner in the leading team and deciding that we had this one ‘ in the bag ‘ he went past me like I was standing still! I had a vision of enormous calf muscles striding past me.

So far as Mr. McCready is concerned, and I can’t remember what subject he taught or whether he was just a relief teacher with us for a couple of terms, I can recall him quite clearly standing in front of the class with his hands in his trouser pockets and jangling coins, or keys, or something.

Happy days, never to be repeated.”
